Hours: Full-time, 40-hour week, Monday-Friday, normal business hours.

Location: Oakland, CA. This is an on-site position.

About East Oakland Community Project (EOCP): Founded in 1990, EOCP is a dynamic and growing organization that provides safety-net and rapid re-housing services to a diverse base of homeless individuals and families in Alameda County.

Summary of Position: This is a new position. The finance team is growing. The Senior Accountant to lead the organization's financial processes and responsibilities. The Senior Accountant is responsible for performing all accounting, financial processing, reporting, and related data management functions. This includes system administration, management, and maintenance of all QuickBooks Online functions; accounts reconciliation; AR/AP management; payroll management; workers' comp administration; tax and audits preparation; contract and budget management, tracking, and forecasting; and all other critical fiscal management responsibilities. The Senior Accountant will adhere to and seek to improve existing internal controls while complying with and staying abreast of GAAP.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: The Senior Accountant plays a key role in EOCP's ability to meet its program goals and, ultimately, achieve its mission. This position reports to the Controller and works closely with the Executive Director as well as the Accounting team. Primary job responsibilities include the following: Accounting operations: Serve as lead on all aspects of accounting operations including accounts receivable/payable, payroll, retirement plan, bank accounts/reconciliations, and the management of financial controls in accordance with GAAP.

  • Has experience managing the budget and financial processes of a company and/or non-profit organization with an annual budget of at least $5M

  • Has at least a bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance and/or at least three years' experience in a Senior Accountant or Accountant position

  • Is fluent in the following software:

    • QuickBooks Online

    • Microsoft Excel

    • Google Suite

  • Has experience working with external auditors and has led the successful execution of an independent audit

  • Understands revenue and expense allocations and can track those allocations against dynamic budgets

  • Creates contract and budgeting forecasting models and can present those models in an easy to understand manner

  • Has an eye towards improvement -- identifies needs and creates and implements a plan for driving improvement

  • Is highly detail-oriented and an effective written and verbal communicator

  • Has strong experience in AR/AP processes

  • Payroll, expenses, and related processes

  • Bank and credit card reconciliation

  • Accuracy of organization's General Ledger

  • Maintenance and improvement of chart of accounts

  • Maintenance and improvement of organization's accounting policies and protocols (e.g. credit card use policy, purchase request policy, etc.)

  • Have extensive and demonstrable experience with QuickBooks Online

  • Pass a criminal background and motor vehicle check

  • Have an advanced degree in Accounting or Finance

  • Have experience working with non-profit organizations

  • Track and secure invoices from vendors, including backup documentation, W-9 forms, etc.

  • Verify that submitted invoices are complete and correct.

  • Manage the coding and authorization of invoices.

  • Record invoices into EOCP's accounting system.

  • Work with staff to process expense reimbursements, payroll-related checks, and other payments to employees, assuring both that standards are maintained and that staff are treated respectfully and in a supportive way.

  • Assist in monitoring cash flow and assuring timely payment of bills.

  • Generate and disburse both electronic and paper payments.

  • Assist with the control of physical financial assets such as checks, credit cards, and cash.

  • Performs actuals for month close

  • Maintains petty cash

  • Understand and apply good internal-controls procedures.

  • Rigorously stay up to date on filing and management of documentation.

  • Take initiative to continue to build skills in both accounting and in EOCP's accounting software.

  • As requested, support the annual audit process and preparation of tax returns.

  • Perform miscellaneous other duties as assigned by Controller.

  • Contribute to a positive work environment among all team members.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree in accounting or comparable on-the-job training.
  • Sufficient accounting/bookkeeping experience to carry out the above responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of GAAP and fundamental accounting procedures.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Strong computer skills, including accounting software programs, Excel, Word, email management, and use of diverse websites.
  • Very strong ability to pay continual attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish priorities, to manage a diversity of tasks on different timelines, and to meet deadlines without reminders.
  • Ability and enthusiastic willingness to learn new processes and systems quickly and independently.
  • Excited about working in an environment with high standards and meeting them.
  • Able to interact effectively and respectfully with diverse ethnicities, races, classes, genders, and sexual orientations.
  • Strong commitment to ethical and professional behavior.

This is a non-exempt, full-time, salaried position. Salary is commensurate with experience and competitive with other non-profit organizations.
