East Oakland Community Project
is a multi-service center offering emergency and
transitional housing in Alameda County. We provide
dignified temporary housing that homeless people,
including individuals battling HIV/AIDS, can call
home while rebuilding their lives. Close to 15,000
of Alameda County’s most needy people have come
through our doors since 1990. With the opening
of Crossroads, our new state-of-the-art emergency
housing facility in Oakland, we have the ability
to reach more people in need with comprehensive,
holistic services.
Addressing a
Pressing Need
When
the Loma Prieta earthquake devastated Oakland in
1989, the City of Oakland and the County of Alameda
joined forces to provide emergency housing for
the community. Public officials turned to EOCP
for assistance in locating and staffing a site.
The immediate solution was a former Safeway warehouse
in East Oakland hastily renovated into temporary
shelter.
As
the building that housed EOCP’s programs and
residents deteriorated—costing too many public
dollars to maintain—EOCP began the search for
a new site. In 2008, EOCP moves to Crossroads. The new 125-bed facility enhances our ability
as the largest 24-hour, multi-service emergency
housing organization in Alameda County to provide
dignified housing, comprehensive health care
connections, and a wide range of support services
in a secure, supportive environment.
In
addition to Crossroads, EOCP operates three transitional
housing programs. Our
House offers a safe home and support
services for homeless young adults. Matilda
Cleveland is a 14-unit congregate living
complex that gives single parent families a stable
home environment with extensive resources for
regaining their foothold. Our Families in
Transition program assists homeless families
living in 10 residential units scattered throughout
Oakland.
