A Family is Reunited
When Ruby* came to EOCP, she was in the process of reuniting
with Abby*, her one-year-old daughter who had been in the
custody of Child Protective Services (CPS). Through EOCP,
Ruby began attending parenting classes and all the life skills
training sessions on anger management. Due to her progress,
she was awarded temporary custody of Abby, who eventually
joined her at EOCP. When Ruby received an unscheduled visit
from her CPS worker, the report by the case worker was positive
regarding her capacity to care for her daughter. With the
help of her case manager, Ruby is currently searching for
employment and daycare.
Counseling and Training Bring a New Life
When Eddie* entered EOCP, he was numbing troubling family issues
with alcohol and marijuana. Our substance abuse counselor
helped him unravel his grief, and he ended his drug and alcohol
dependency. As the next huge step towards recovery, Eddie
found a job as a skilled laborer. At the same time, he attended
a skills training program and eventually landed a good job
in the computer field. He now earns enough money to rent
an apartment and has successfully established a new life
for himself.
A Young Adult Finds Guidance at Our House
Mark* was schizophrenic and not on medication when he moved into
Our House. EOCP’s substance abuse counselor tested
Mark to determine his diagnosis and his case manager helped
him find a doctor to obtain psychiatric medication. Staff also
helped him apply for SSI and Social Security benefits. At Our
House, Mark learned household and money management skills and
improved his self-esteem. His case manager helped him find
a job as a cook, and he was soon earning enough money so that
he no longer needed public assistance. Mark eventually moved
into an apartment with a roommate while taking classes at Laney
College. The Our House staff has become a family for Mark and
he returns regularly to visit and attend holiday events.
Resources Stabilize a Family
Bonnie* came to EOCP with her five children, penniless and
with little information about the resources available to
her. Situating her safely in one of our family rooms, her
case manager then turned to her life skills and employment
training needs. Bonnie attended a job training program while
her case manager counseled her in job readiness. She earned
a CNA license and took a job helping others as a nurse's
assistant. Bonnie now has a permanent home for her family.
Treatment Helps Win the Battle
Richard* arrived at EOCP from prison, HIV-positive and with
no connections to primary health care. While his case manager
assisted him in navigating through emotional and psychological
issues, the staff at Health Care for the Homeless ministered
to the medical needs he had long neglected by connecting
him to community resources to cope with his HIV. Improved
health helped him regain his stability in both his housing
and work situations. Richard now lives independently in a
studio apartment and holds a part-time job. He continues
to participate in EOCP’s after-care substance abuse
program to remain grounded in his new life.
